Horse antioxidants serve to limit oxidative stress on cells. Some examples of antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, or selenium.
Horses may be given antioxidants directly, or nutrigenomics may be used. Thus, a specific nutrient (selenomethionine) acts to increase the production of a protein (glutathione peroxidase), which in turn acts to limit oxidative stress incurred by effort. The presence of the nutrient in no way alters the quality of the protein, it simply has a quantitative effect in that it allows more to be produced. This nutrient increases the horse's antioxidant ability and hence its resistance to effort.
